PRIDE MONTH 2025: WHY CREATING SAFE SPACES MATTERS MORE THAN EVER

June is Pride Month — a time to celebrate the LGBTQIA+ community, honour the history of queer activism, and advocate for a world where everyone is free to express who they are and who they love.

At The Neuro Directory, we exist to make things easier for neurodivergent people — to connect them with services, support, and professionals who truly get it. And while I don’t identify as queer myself, I believe it’s incredibly important to stand in allyship with the LGBTQIA+ community — not just in June, but always.

Why? Because at its core, Pride is about inclusion, acceptance, and visibility — values that deeply align with our mission.

Many of the people using The Neuro Directory identify as LGBTQIA+. That’s not a coincidence.

There’s a strong overlap between queerness and neurodivergence — and both groups have a long history of being misunderstood, overlooked, or actively excluded from mainstream spaces.

Whether it’s being told to “tone it down,” “act normal,” or simply not talk about who they are, both queer and neurodivergent people are often asked to shrink themselves to fit into systems that weren’t designed with them in mind.

We’re here to say: you don’t have to shrink.

You deserve to take up space, to be seen as you are, and to access support that actually supports you — not tries to change you.

Understanding the Overlap

There’s growing awareness around the intersection of neurodivergence and queer identity, and for good reason. So many neurodivergent people are part of the LGBTQIA+ community. Some researchers suggest it’s because neurodivergent folks are more likely to question norms — including norms around gender and sexuality. Others point to shared experiences of navigating life feeling “different” or “outside the box.”

Regardless of the reason, the overlap is real — and it highlights the importance of building spaces that are truly inclusive, not just of neurodivergence but of all identities.

What Allyship Means to Us

Allyship, for us, isn’t just a rainbow logo in June. It’s in the details:

🧠 Using inclusive language

🏳🌈 Working only with providers who are safe, affirming, and LGBTQIA+ friendly

🔎 Listening to feedback from our community and making improvements

🤝 Holding space for complexity — including the fact that people don’t fit neatly into

boxes

At The Neuro Directory, we’re not perfect — but we’re always working to be better. Being an ally means ongoing learning, being open to correction, and committing to creating spaces where people don’t have to mask or explain their identity in order to access support.

Celebrating Pride with Purpose

Pride Month is about joy and visibility, but also about resilience. It’s about recognising the progress that’s been made while also acknowledging the work still to do — especially for people at the intersection of multiple marginalised identities.

This month, we want to shine a light on LGBTQIA+ neurodivergent people who are running businesses, building communities, showing up for their clients, and doing things their own way. You inspire us. Your voices matter. And we’re proud to be a space that celebrates and supports you — not just during Pride, but year-round.

So whether you’re out and proud, questioning, private, or still figuring things out — we see you. If you’re neurodivergent and queer, or if you’re one and not the other, you’re welcome here. There’s no “right” way to exist — just your way.

Happy Pride Month from all of us at The Neuro Directory. You belong here. 💛
