BUILT FOR MY SON, SHARED WITH THE WORLD: THE STORY BEHIND JAM UP!
Written by Rachael Malthouse
I started Jam Up! not as a business idea, but as a mother looking for solutions. My autistic son, was struggling with everyday tasks that many people take for granted—getting dressed, brushing his teeth, following daily routines. As a parent, I was doing everything I could to help him, but I quickly discovered that there was a huge gap in the kind of digital support available to families like ours. The existing tools were either too complex, too clinical, or simply not designed with neurodivergent children in mind. So I began developing something that would actually work for him. That’s where the idea for Jam Up! began.
What started as a personal mission quickly grew into something much bigger. As I began talking to other parents and carers of autistic children, I realised just how widespread the need was. So many families were facing the same daily battles—struggling to find ways to support their children in learning and completing everyday self-care tasks. The stress and exhaustion were universal. But more importantly, I saw that my idea had the potential to really help. With encouragement from other parents, educators, and healthcare professionals, I made the leap to build Jam Up! as a digital platform that could serve not just my son, but thousands of families.
Jam Up! is a task-based digital platform designed to support autistic children and those with additional needs as they develop everyday life skills. It breaks down complex daily routines into simple, visual, and interactive steps.
Jam Up! is available to download for free from the app stores or via our website www.jamup.io. Our first focus was the task of “getting dressed,” which quickly gained traction with families and professionals.
Since then, we’ve developed a our tooth brushing task —and we’re working on new modules, including one that supports menstruation education for autistic young people who menstruate and a homework task. The platform is gamified, customisable, and uses evidence-based strategies designed with neurodivergent users in mind. It also provides top tips for parents / carers with short videos designed and delivered by healthcare practitioners. It’s not just functional—it’s empowering.
We’re not doing this alone. I’ve been incredibly fortunate to work with a talented and passionate team who share the same vision: to make everyday life a little bit easier and a lot more joyful for autistic children and their families. We’re collaborating with organisations and Universities to ensure clinical accuracy and accessibility. We’ve received funding and support from Innovate UK, among others, to help bring Jam Up! to life.
What makes Jam Up! different is that it’s born from lived experience. I know what it feels like to be a parent searching for help and coming up short. That’s why everything we build is rooted in real-life needs, shaped by feedback from our community, and tested with the people who will actually use it. We’ve built a community of almost 5000 parents and carers who continue to guide our journey, and I’m so grateful for their trust, support, and honesty.
Ultimately, Jam Up! exists because no family should feel alone, and no child should be left behind simply because the world wasn’t designed with them in mind. What began as a tool to support my son has become a platform to support many. And we’re only just getting started.
